History

April 1907 Daily Mail model competition held at Alexandra Palace. Alliott Verdon Roe wins first and second prizes.

8th June 1908 A.V.Roe's first "hops" in his Roe-1 Avroplane at Brooklands.

16th October 1908 The American S F Cody achieved the first extended fully-witnessed flights at Farnborough in his Cody Army Aeroplane
No: 1.

22nd July 1909 A.V Roe became the first Englishman to fly in an entirely British aircraft at Lea Marshes.

January 1910 A.V.Roe & Co founded, one of the oldest continuously operating aircraft manufacturers in the world.





Aircraft and Events

Replicas of his first two aircraft - the Roe-1 biplane and the Avro triplane - have been constructed with a view to demonstrating their airworthiness.

Centenary celebrations will start on 7th June 2008 at Brooklands Museum and at the British Aviation Centenary dinner at Mercedes-Benz World, and continue at the Farnborough International Airshow a month later from 14th to 20th July 2008.

In 2009 a Centenary celebration at IWM Duxford featuring the history of Avro on the weekend of 23rd/24th May 2009.

A ceremony will take place at Lea Valley as part of the Lea Valley Experience on 12th and 13th July 2009 to commemorate the first flight of an Englishman in an all British aircraft.
